This exhibition is the result of a graphic research about small acts of violence in our daily lives. Sofia observed ordinary actions of her everyday life such as peeling fruits, cutting nails, flossing and shaving. From that point, she started to identify how these actions were violent: cutting, sharpening, the eventual bleeding, the risk of getting injured by something so ordinary.
With her drawings and embroideries she wants to illustrate injuries we do not see. How we talk to people, what is expected from us, how much we give, the limits that we set, the limits that are crossed. She questions if it is possible to overcome an act of violence or if it is like cutting an orange: once it’s in two pieces, it can’t become whole again.
There’s also a questioning of who is doing the harm. Is it the person shaving and accidentally cutting off a piece of skin, the person saying “yes” to something she or he actually does not agree with? Or is the harm caused by a third person? The artist wants to look at each of these trite situations and investigate if they are worth overlooking or if they need attention and special care.
The name DIA given to this exhibition means “day” in Portuguese, and it also refers to the late dia slides. Those slides were a way of presenting pictures, which are often a frame of our lives.
